The GOSPEL TRUTH
LETTER OF

CHARLES G. FINNEY

1853

To Hamilton Hill

17 February 1853

[MS in Oberlin College Archives 7/1/5.]

Syracuse 17. Feb 1853.

Dear Br. Hill.

Deacon Orson White of Richville,

St. Lawrence Co. N.York has just left

with me for the Oberlin college

the inclosed £100. bill. He does not

believe in the lawfulness of taking

interest & therefore does not give this

to be a part of the endowment fund.

but to be used for other purposes not

involving the letting of it upon interest.

He says he declined, when the agent

invited him, to sign for a scholarship

or to give any thing for the fund, but

told him that he would give £100.

as donation to be used for other

purposes. He refused his reason in

writing but gives this to redeem his

oral pledge. The Lords work goes on

steadily increasing & deepening.

We are in good health.

Wife joins in love to Br. & Sister

Hill & we wish to be remembered

to our friends. Please drop me

a line certifying the receipt of this.

Your Brother

C. G. Finney.

There is no receipt in the Finney Papers.
